SYNOPSIS
This fast-paced historical novel traces the heroism of the Finnish infantry at the beginning of World War 2 as the Finns resisted the vastly stronger Soviet military that was trying to occupy Finland. The narrative follows the fate of a Finnish sniper, Simo Hayha, who was nicknamed “the White Death” by the Russian soldiers because of his deadly accuracy. By the time an armistice was negotiated in the spring of 1940, Finland had suffered 70,000 casualties, compared with the 400,000 Soviet soldiers who were killed or injured. The courage and determination of the Finns who resisted the Soviet take-over attempt inspired the Western allies and was said to have encouraged Hitler to launch his invasion of the Soviet Union.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
How well did Olivier Norek blend historical facts regarding the Winter War with the very human experience of the Finnish soldiers who were resisting the overwhelming Soviet military?
What were the factors that enabled the Finns to fight back against the Soviet attacks? Do these factors have parallels with the current Russian war against Ukraine?
Despite his skills as a sniper, in what ways was Simo Hayha a reluctant hero?
How did the Finnish military leaders compare with their Soviet counterparts as they successfully countered the Soviet attacks?
